22 April Charlottetown, Lobster and Ice Cream

Smooth sailing and an early morning arrival in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island (PEI), Canada. The weather was a cool 42F, but as the day wore on the sun came out and it was a very nice spring day. Our tour didn’t start until 1100 so the trip to the gym wasn’t rushed, nor the shower and a bite of breakfast. Just a bite, because our tour was for a lobster meal, cole slaw and potato salad. It started with PEI mussels, large and steamed just right. We had a choice of beer or wine to accompany. There was entertainment but until food was served the solo guitar player was drowned out by conversations at the tables of ten as people made new connections that hadn’t occurred on the ship. Virginia is well represented on this leg of the trip. We’ve met six other couples from Virginia, including a lady from Leesburg.

Immigration and Customs Building. Our lunch venue was to the left past the condos in the background. A short walk

Crowded in a nice way

Have seen PEI Mussels advertised. These were excellent!!!

The Main Course. 300 flown in from Halifax. The season in Charlottetown starts after Mothers' Day

After we strolled from the wharf to the town center. In some ways the architecture and street layout reminded us of Alexandria, VA. There are Prince, Queen, and King streets in both places. Many of the homes and churches had similar architectures. One thing that was different—Pedestrians have the right-of-way in Charlottetown. If you were within three feet of the curb cars stopped. It made no difference if you were at an intersection or the middle of the block.

The day was bright and sunny and we walked to the center of town and found a store with the appropriate commentative t-shirt. Karla even found one on sale, last of a series. Fortunately, the store was located next to an ice cream shop rated the best in the world. I must say it was good stuff!

Unlike most cruises we've not seen many churches. This Catholic Cathedral was a short walk from the ship.

An old bonded warehouse. Liquor exports stored here along with booze confiscated during prohibition.

Dark clouds gathered as we headed back to the ship and sprinkles arrived as we wen up the gangplank. Later it poured, than was sunny, than poured, then sunny. We missed the brief for the next day’s activities, but Mark, Excursion Manager, caught is at dinner and said it was very doubtful we would land at Ile de Madeleine due to high winds that would make it impossible to tender in. With that information we headed to the Dani and James’ late evening performance in the Explorer Lounge. A slightly different vibe from their early performance and we met yet another couple from Virginia.
