6 May Milwaukee, WI Ending in an Industrial Port—Great Tour

Kind of a weird day to finish on. We arrive in Milwaukee at Noon, so had a number of sea-day and/or afternoon activities in the morning. The best was a lecture by a woman who had hiked along significant portions of all five Great lakes. Loreen Niewenhuis is her name and she is an excellent speaker. She used no notes and had fantastic slides to illustrate her adventure and point out interesting facts and some of the beautiful scenery that borders the lakes. Getting up and getting ready for the day and this 65lecture was well worth the effort.

Then it was on to our last trivia event. We won!!

Glad to see us in Milwaukee

We took the included tour with one of the best guides on the whole trip. So good to finish on a high note after some of the disappointments. You could tell she loves this city, is proud of its buildings and people, knows its history and tells it in an interesting way. We had time to visit The North Point Lighthouse, The Harley-Davidson Museum, and the Pabst House. The lighthouse is in a neighborhood that reminded us of the area around Southwest High School in Kansas City, MO. Large homes. mature trees, similar style homes, each different from the other, but all compatible.

The North Point Lighthouse Neighborhood

The Harley-Davidson Museum was more interesting than either of us expected. Karla enjoyed watching the movie clips with H-D motorcycles in them. We both enjoyed the displays and actual motorcycles showing the advances in engineering and style over the years. The most unique display was a motorcycle washed ashore in 2012 after the Tōhoku earthquake tidal wave. Rather than attempt a restoration, the museum has elected to display the motorcycle as it was found. Due to the salt and sand that remain on the bike, corrosion continues to this day.

The final stop was the Pabst home. Built by Captain Pabst who rose in the ranks from commercial cabin boy to one of Milwaukee’s Great Lakes shipping magnates. His home has been restored and many of its original furniture and accessories have been returned by surviving family members. As we entered the home we were given a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer to sip as we toured the facility. The docents, as most guides, were so happy to have cruise ship guests again. They took our pictures, answered our questions, and offered to replenish our beer.
