Ah Saturday, get to sleep in late. If only we could. Karla is usually up by 6 and I’m hard pressed to make it past 7. We headed for the gym. They had one of the instructors leading a class that I took, while Karla headed for the treadmill. After, I went to the aft deck with a stop for yogurt and cinnamon rolls for a little sun time. maybe a little too much. I was a little pink later in the day. Karla got coffee and went off to finish her book. One of the things we’ve learned on these long trips is that “away” time is alright, maybe even a good thing.
The Captains Noon (or so) Announcement showed us 19S 35.15W, 47 nautical miles East of Sao Miguel, Brazil. We’ve traveled 2000 NM since leaving Montevideo and have 2150 to go. On our ocean cruises these noon announcements are almost always promptly at noon. Here, not so much.
The women won again, by one point, in our Team Trivia contest. Which tennis player won 18 tournaments in the 80’s? We guessed a male player, the women a female one. They were right!!
This evening’s lecture was on creatures of the deep. Not only are they unique in appearance, but the effort required to study them is also unique and kind of messy. A large net is let out taking hours to sink to the deepest ocean and hours to retrieve. Fish are than sorted, identified and catalogued by hand by the on-board scientific team. Finally, fish of interest to each investigation are divvied out for what ever study is ongoing.

We decided a change of venue for dinner and went Italian at Manfredi’s. Oddly enough the catch of the day was Osso Bucco. We passed and wen for lasagna. Our Minnesota/Florida friends passed by, turned out they had just enjoyed the same Chef’s Table experience we had on 30 March. The chef did share how they make such perfect poached eggs. Eggs in the shell are cooked for one hour at 60C, plunged in an ice bath and stored in a refrigerator until needed. They are peeled and reheated in hot water and vinegar prior to serving.

New Birds on display. The interior designer for Viking discovered a lady on ETSY who makes these birds from felt. We now have a more tropical variety to replace those residing in Antarctica.
