16 April Sea Day Fifteen Balloon Away Trivia Win for the Men

Karla up and out the door for today’s 0730 weather balloon launch. Many more people on deck seven than the last time. Lots of interest in these science events. Mark, the Expedition Manager gave us some behind the scenes picture tonight at dinner.

I forgot to include a mention of yesterday’s lectures on ocean acidification and algae toxins. The auditorium had about 80 people for both of those lectures. Both offered pretty convincing arguments that the climate is changing in ways not previously seen. Whether it’s man-made or not can be debated, but oceans and Great Lakes are becoming more acidic, and algae blooms and toxin releases more frequent and in places where they’ve not been seen before.

This was a successful launch and data received for just over two hours. We had breakfast and met with Mark to select expeditions/excursions for the final leg of our journey—Toronto to Milwaukee. We should have a good time seeing places and doing things in a part of the US we’ve never been to, not to mention Canada.

Mark pointed out that the expedition ships will continue to offer expedition type activities whenever possible. The scenic tours, church and museum visits will not be offered if more adventurous options (kayaking, special ops boats, hikes) are possible. Something to keep in mind for future travelers.

Men bested the women today at trivia but were not the winning team. What are the colors of the two bottom rings on the Olympic flag?

We have to change rooms in New York. No need to pack our hanging stuff, but all else into a suitcase. We started that today and will finish tomorrow. All this because we strung together three different voyages onto our original New York to Milwaukee trip which was two separate voyages. When we made that reservation in 2020 the only way to do it and retain the same room was to have one of the smaller cabins. We’re giving up twn drawers, a closet and shelf space. Oh the suffering!!!

The lecture on the beginnings of slavery was interesting. The British capture of a Portuguese ship with 12 African slaves was the start of what became a major undertaking to facilitate the production of sugar from the Caribbean. Litigation of insurance claims for slaves lost in transit was the beginning of the end.

I guess the Easter Bunny can swim or fly, because he came while we were at dinner.
