14 April San Juan, Puerto Rico Raices crowded

We opted to not do any of the activities offered as we’ve been to San Juan a few times. Had a crazy morning with immigration. Well organized, but all tour minded people got to go first. Those just doing independent touring were last. We waited until about 8 AM. No sleeping in as we hoped. Passports were checked and we were directed to a waiting area.

Finally returned to the ship, got ready for the day and departed about 11:45. Oops, too late as the embarkation deadline was 1:30. Beautiful day and we walked to restaurant Raices recommended to us by a Hertz employee in Kansas City, Missouri, about 4 or 5 years ago. Made it the first time with our friends Sandy Piech and Bob Lentini. Thought we’d give it another try as we really enjoyed it. BUT, three cruise ships were in port, and as we started to enter the restaurant, someone behind us asked if they could help us. Yes, we were there for lunch. Too bad for us, at least a 45-minute wait. Back to the ship. I ate a light lunch. Rick went to the room with his blueberry muffin since he wanted to work on posting the blog. Best to do it with available bandwidth while people are off of the ship. Finished the salad and Rick arrived. Mmmmm…a piece of pizza. Mmmm….and a sandwich. Guess the blueberry muffin wasn’t enough!! Afterwards, some Wordle and info searching and we

decided a nap was in order. We both conked. I think the heat, the early morning activity to the terminal and the waiting did us in. One of the couples from our trivia group organized a dinner for 5 couples in a private dining room and it was so very nice. Kayhan the Restaurant Manger facilitated the deal and we had two great waiters, one new to the ship and quite the comedian. She joked about how nervous she was waiting on such a distinguished group; the battery was low on her electronic ordering device. She did take a pretty good picture of us.

Decadent Dessert

The Women and Men Of Trivia

Spiny lobster was on the menu, the serving about the size of a fist, Mike Tyson’s fist. Everyone enjoyed their meal, wine and dessert. Then it was time for trivia, men against the women. The host couple asked the recreation director for 15 questions that had not been used already in a trivia competition. The answers were sealed in an envelope. It was crazy fun. The guys won again. In what year did Uriah Bolt set the 9.58 second record for 100 meters? A little depressing, but the ladies made a good showing. Said good night to everyone and headed up the Explorer’s Lounge for some late-night music (9PM). Yawn.

Tor Hagan, Viking owner, is aboard this leg to New York. One of the trivia couples sat nest to him at lunch. We caught a glimpse as we broke up after dinner. Our brush with fame.

Even without our restaurant success we had a great day with new friends.
